The notion of the objective psyche is an important contribution of Jungian thought to the study of psychology and the apperception of soul. Some confusion obscures this core concept, particularly since Jung uses the term “objective” in many contexts: to identify what is outwardly observed and experienced, to differentiate the objective vs. subjective interpretation of dreams, or to refer to Freud’s efforts to map out an objective psychology, rooted in biology and the empirical sciences.

However, understanding the “objective” nature of the psyche demands new ways of thinking and being. It is a living self-reflexive idea, for which any discussion, as Jung put it, is psyche “speaking about itself.”

Psychology inevitably merges with the psychic process itself. It can no longer be distinguished from the latter, and so turns into it… It is not, in the deepest sense, an explanation of this process, for no explanation of the psychic can be anything other than the living process of the psyche itself. (CW 8, par 429)

Our examination of the objective psyche will explore Jung’s ideas but also look further into post-Jungian thoughts on the matter, particularly the work of Wolfgang Giegerich. Edmonton analyst, John Hoedl, will join us to help us through this challenging and rewarding material.
