No one would argue with the fact that the war in Ukraine, the Covid pandemic and increasing disasters due to climate change pose an existential threat to our species. All three are dire and require intense activism to limit the destruction. Yet only one mobilizes everyone, everywhere. Why? This lecture will explore each of the ‘Horsemen’, look at the underlying archetypal foundation of each and propose that the role of collective memory is key and that when it is missing it is harder to mobilize for a cause, no matter how dire. Jan Bauer, MA, was born and raised in the USA, lived in various European countries for 20 years, and has sort of resolved her tension of opposites by settling in Quebec, Canada for the last 40 years. She has been involved in training with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts as Director of Admissions and then of Training. The idea of ‘projection’ has become commonplace in our understanding of relationship dynamics and even in our conversations. Accusing someone of ‘projecting’ has become a casual way of insinuating that someone’s perspective may have more to do with their own psychology than the person or object they are commenting on. And yet, Jung wrote: “We must bear in mind that we do not make projections, rather they happen to us.” (Letters Vol. II, Page 563, 1960)  Being curious about what hooks us in other people is a dynamic process of learning more about ourselves and, as Jung observes, it is not a failure to find ourselves projecting, but rather, a natural occurrence that happens over and over to us. The notion of projection was a central feature of Jung’s thinking and connected to the fundamental principle of a deep listening to and reading of our environment for clues about our own psyches and unconscious. This talk will explore these ideas in more depth and focus on the art and science of Jung’s thinking around the interpersonal nature of self-discovery. Jung said, “The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego, the second half is going inward and letting go of it.” Indeed, he is well known for his theory of adult development and his work on individuation in the second half of life. With this lecture I would like to propose a third phase of life after the first phase (building up a life structure) and second phase (developing a relationship with the inner world). This third phase is especially relevant now as many of us can expect today to live well past the 20th century life expectancy of 65 years old. I have chosen to talk about individuation after age 70 because I want to change this analytical focus on end of life for older adults as a time of preparation for death and instead talk about life and the new possibilities after 70. This phase is not a further continuation of the second half of life. Karen Evers-Fahey, PHD, is a Zurich trained Jungian analyst with over 40 years experience in individual psychotherapy and Jungian analytical practice. She taught analytical psychology and was a training and supervisory analyst in Zurich at ISAP as well as the Jung Institute Zurich for 10 years before returning to her native Canada in 2007 to continue her analytical practice and teaching/ training activities in Victoria, BC. She is also a Registered Clinical Counselor in BC. Jungian analyst Eve Maram’s The Schizophrenia Complex focuses on the thoughts and feelings constellated by encounters with what we call schizophrenia, for those who experience symptoms, and for those others impacted by them.
