The OAJA Analyst Training Program is a “Recognized Education and Training Program” by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

The OAJA Analyst Training Program is registered as an Ontario Career College (OCC) by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities. OSAP is not available.

Tuition

OAJA uses a ‘Standard Tuition Fee with Unlimited Attendance’. The ‘Standard Tuition Fee with Unlimited Attendance’ is payable every semester a candidate is enrolled in the OAJA training program. Leaves of Absence are considered “exceptional” and bear a fee of $650/670 per semester. Refunds will be in accordance with OCC regulations. All fees are subject to change.

Domestic Students

At this time, the cost of the “Standard Tuition Fee with Unlimited Attendance” for domestic students is $4,143 per semester (e-transfer, cheque, or money order) or $4,265 (PayPal/credit card), payable mid-July for Fall semester 2024 and mid-November for Winter semester 2025.

International Students

Pre-payment of the first full year’s (2 semesters) tuition in advance is required for international students by the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in order to facilitate applications for a student visa/study permit. The annual ‘Standard Tuition Fee with Unlimited Attendance’ for international students is $8,405 Canadian dollars ($4,142.50 x 2 semesters + $120 administrative fee), payable by wire transfer. This fee is payable early May for the Fall 2024/Winter 2025 academic year, in order to allow adequate time to apply for a student visa/work permit [1].

From the international student’s second year in training onward, since they already have a student visa, they can pay on a per semester basis in July and November, rather than paying the entire year’s tuition up front in May. Please note: any international applicant who pre-pays tuition and who is refused a student visa/study permit shall be refunded their full tuition pre-payment minus the $120 administration fee.

Communication

Candidates maintain their own formal record sheets of classroom hours, supervision, etc. Candidates report annually on their progress through the training program on a Candidate Record Form.

Candidates meet with their Selection Committee members once per year for a discussion. Candidates may make appointments with any member of their Selection Committee, at any time, if they wish to build an ongoing relationship with them for mentoring. OAJA has an established Candidate Complaint Process. OAJA has an annual Candidate and Analysts meeting. Candidates select representatives for Stages 1 and 2. Candidates are also encouraged to reflect on the teaching quality of the seminars and courses by filling out a feedback form after each experience. OAJA’s Code of Ethics and Practice and our Complaints Procedure Code apply to Analysts, Analysands, and Training Candidates. The Director of Training is always available to answer candidates’ emails or phone calls with questions about the training program regulations and procedures. The Director of Training leads a mandatory orientation meeting at the beginning of Stages 1 and 2. Candidates have access online to all Regulation Manuals, forms, and course information. Candidates write an annual self-reflection report.

Program Structure: Stage One

The first stage of training, leading to the Stage One exams, will last a minimum of four semesters, during which candidates must have completed 150 hours of face-to-face (in person) analysis. All 150 hours must be with a member of OAJA. The counting of hours of the training analysis begins from September 1 of the first semester of enrolment. Throughout training, all candidates are required to have at least 25 hours of analysis per calendar year.

Instruction and Examinations

In general, lectures, seminars and workshops will be offered by Jungian analysts and others once per month over a long weekend (typically Thursday to Sunday), during two semesters: September to December and January to May. In addition, some coursework may be offered on other weekends. Such instruction will not be tied to specific Stage One exam subjects (see below) but rather will be designed to provide an overall appreciation of the scope, theory and application of analytical psychology. A recommended reading list will be provided. Exams will be scheduled in October – December and April - June. One paper on the interpretation of symbolic material will be required.

Studies in Psychopathology/Psychiatric Observation Internship
Nature of Studies in Psychopathology

Studies in Psychopathology is a three year, six semester course, taught by psychiatrists. As part of the training program structure, Studies in Psychopathology will include classes on major psychiatric conditions and, where possible, audio-visual components of patients suffering from such psychiatric conditions.
or

Nature of the Psychiatric Observation Internship Experience

The Psychiatric Observation internship experience allows candidates to observe people suffering from severe forms of mental illness, to the degree that they have to be hospitalized, are in-patients in a clinic or are seen regularly by a psychiatrist in a clinical setting. This gives candidates a chance to observe the signs and symptoms of an ego that has been severely destabilized, and a chance to observe their own responses throughout this experience. It is expected that the Psychiatric Observation Internship experience will be arranged to allow for some degree of continuous contact with the patients, and that discussion with the supervisors and resident clinicians will help students deepen their own set of diagnostic skills. Clinical settings can include rehab centers that deal with addictions.

Stage One Exams

Candidates may take the Stage One exams after successful completion of the above requirements. They will be examined orally by an examiner in the presence of an observer. The examiner for each subject may be chosen by the candidate from a list provided by the Exam Committee, who will appoint a member of OAJA as observer.

Evaluation will be based on:

  • 1. theoretical knowledge
  • 2. the ability to relate to and work with psychic material
  • 3. the capacity to handle the examination encounter.

Candidates will be examined in the following subjects:

  • • Fundamentals of Analytical Psychology (typology, complex theory, etc.) - 45 minutes
  • • Interpretation of Dreams - 30 minutes
  • • Interpretation of Fairy Tales and Mythology-30 minutes
  • • Cultural Anthropology - 30 minutes

Successful completion of Stage One exams in all subjects will be required before the candidate may apply to advance to Stage Two. Candidates who fail three or more exams will have to apply to their Selection Committee for permission to re-take them. Acceptance to Stage Two will depend on the recommendation of the candidate’s Selection Committee following three individual interviews.

Program Structure: Stage Two

The second stage of training, which leads to the Stage Two exams, will last a minimum of four semesters, during which an additional 150 hours of face-to-face analysis with an IAAP member (not necessarily an OAJA analyst) is required. Throughout training, all candidates are required to have at least 25 hours of analysis per calendar year. In Stage Two, candidates are called “Advanced Candidates.”

Association Experiment

Advanced Candidates will be required to perform an association experiment on a subject-person of their choice. A written paper on the results must be submitted to the Seminar Leader for approval.

Instruction

Ancillary lectures, seminars, and workshops will be offered as for candidates in Stage One, in a similar time frame. Again, one paper on the interpretation of symbolic material will be required.

Client Work

Before Stage Two exams, advanced candidates must accumulate a minimum of 300 hours with clients of their own, involving at least five analysands: one case of 80 hours minimum, one case of 50 hours minimum, and three cases of 20 hours minimum each. Written reports on each case must be submitted. All client hours must be completed with clients 18 years or older. Candidates are required to have liability insurance in Stage Two while they work with clients under supervision.

Supervision

Advanced candidates must complete a minimum of 100 hours of individual supervision with an IAAP analyst with at least 5 years’ experience since graduation.

For Stage Two candidates practising in Ontario: OAJA candidates in Stage Two, practicing in Ontario, shall have all their supervision with OAJA or IAAP supervisors. At least one of these supervisors must carry the designation “CRPO Supervisor”. Candidates may supervise with OAJA Senior Analysts who do not have the designation “CRPO Supervisor” but who are registered with another Ontario College granting access to the controlled act of psychotherapy.

For Stage Two candidates practising in other provinces or countries: If supervising outside of Ontario, candidates shall have their OAJA supervision by an OAJA or IAAP analyst who is qualified to provide clinical supervision in his or her jurisdiction.

It is required that candidates work with both male and female analysts in supervision. Fees for supervision will be the responsibility of the candidate. The required frequency of supervision of a case is a minimum of one hour of supervision for every four hours of analytic work. All advanced candidates must have continuous supervision of all of their on-going training cases until graduation is confirmed.

Group Supervision

Candidates will be required to participate in at least 90 hours of group discussions of cases before graduation. Group Supervision is chaired by a Senior Analyst. Five presentations by candidates of their own case material will be required.

Thesis

Before graduation, candidates must submit a substantial thesis demonstrating their understanding of the theory and application of analytical psychology. Thesis topics must be approved by the Director of Training. Candidates will choose an advisor and two readers, all to be members of OAJA.

Stage Two Exams

Candidates will be permitted to take the Stage Two exams only after successful completion of all requirements, and with the approval of their Selection Committee after three individual interviews. There is a Stage Two Exams Application fee of $1030 (e-transfer, cheque, or money order) or $1060 (PayPal/credit card).
